The following article provides information for common issues you may experience with your portable (external) USB hard drive.

Q: How do I begin the installation of the NTI software?
A: When you connect the Toshiba USB hard drive the AutoPlay function of Windows XP & Vista will prompt you to install backup software.
Note: Windows 7 and Windows 8 do not allow USB hard drives to AutoPlay. You will only be prompted to open the drive to view files or use this drive for backup. In this case, select Use this drive for backup.

Q: Why can't my tablet detect my external hard drive is connected?
A: You must format the external hard drive to exFAT to work with Android tablets. Most external hard drives are formatted NTFS by default. Click here for instructions to format the external hard drive for use with an Android tablet.

Q: How do I format My Toshiba External hard drive for use on my Toshiba laptop (PC)?
A: Click here for instructions for formatting an external hard drive for PC use.

Q: How do I reformat My Toshiba External hard drive to be used on my MAC Computer?
A: You can change it to FAT (ms dos) to work with PC and MAC. For MAC use only, reformat to Mac Extended. Click here for instructions for formatting an external hard drive using a MAC computer.

Q: How do I bring back My Toshiba external hard drive to factory settings, or delete the current files on the ext drive?
A: No need to reformat the drive.
Steps to delete files:
1. Access the Toshiba External hard drive and look for the folder MY FILES (which contains your backup files) and delete it.
2. Now look for the folder IMAGES (which contains the complete system backup) and delete it. Now your Toshiba External hard drive is back to factory settings.

Q: Does Toshiba provide any software drivers for the Canvio External Hard Drives?
A: The Toshiba External hard drives are plug-and-play devices. No genuine Toshiba drivers are needed or provided by Toshiba. When you plug the drive into a USB port on your laptop (for the first time on that particular laptop) the drivers will install automatically. Contact www.microsoft.com for troubleshooting the Windows Operating system or contact the manufacturer of your computer.

Q: How can I test my Canvio External Hard Drive for errors?
A: You can run the Windows Check Disk tool.

Q: How do I make my computer boot to my USB hard drive or CD/DVD boot disc?
A: You need to get to your computer’s boot menu.  All computers are a little different so we would recommend that you contact your computer’s manufacture for what key to press.  Sometime during boot up the computer will show text on the screen telling you what key to press, common keys are F12, F10, & ESC.

Q: When restoring my files to their original location, the program does not give me any overwrite options.
A: The program is defaulted to always keep both files if they are the same name. The restored duplicate file will have a “(1)” added to the end of the name.

Q: How can I add another job to the program?
A: The backup program only allows for two jobs, one File & Folder and one Complete System.  You can modify the File & Folder job to add more data.

Q: Is Backup Now EZ compatible with Windows 7?
A: Yes, version 1.1.2.77 or higher is compatible with Windows 7.

Q: I had my computer turned off and it missed both scheduled backups.  When I turned it on it prompted me to run a missed backup for my Complete System backup but not my File & Folder backup, why?
A: The missed backup prompt will not appear if the backup schedule is set for Hourly since it will run on the next hour.
