Dear Toshiba Customer,

The information in this document explains how to update your TOSHIBA PC from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.

TOSHIBA PC models preinstalled with Windows 8 supported by TOSHIBA for update to Windows 8.1
  1. Supported models with Windows 8 preinstalled: ALL
  2. Unsupported models with Windows 8 preinstalled: NONE

 

Important items to review and consider before updating to Windows 8.1
  1. Visit the Windows Compatibilty Center to view the latest information from Microsoft on Windows 8.1 at: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibility/win8
  2. The time it will take to download and install the Windows 8.1 update to your computer may vary depending on your PC configuration, speed and amount of traffic on your internet connection.
  3. Always backup your files and any applications you installed prior to updating to Windows 8.1 in the event of loss or damage to these files and applications.
  4. Some third party hardware and software may not work properly after the update process.
  5. If you’re PC comes with a fingerprint registration utility the registered fingerprints will no longer be valid after upgrading to Windows 8.1. Confirm your passwords before continuing and you will need to re-register fingerprints after updating to Windows 8.1.

Prior to updating to Windows 8.1

This includes recommended app / driver updates and actions that need to be taken prior to updating

  1. Make sure that the AC adaptor is connected during the entire update process.
  2. Make sure to keep Internet access available during the entire update process.
  3. Use the TOSHIBA Recovery Media Creator utility to create recovery media (DVD or USB Flash Memory). This will allow you to restore the factory preinstalled software if you have issues during the Windows 8.1 update or you choose to uninstall Windows 8.1.   4. Backup the files on your PC. If you need help backing up your files visit: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/set-drive-file-history
  5. Manually uninstall any TOSHIBA identified components. See APPENDIX A in this document for a list of components and instructions.
  6. Download and install TOSHIBA service station by visiting: http://support.toshiba.com/support/viewContentDetail?contentId=4003322
  7. Update your TOSHIBA components and drivers by using TOSHIBA Service Station. To access the TOSHIBA Service Station:
    1. On Start screen, type Service Station, and then click Service Station from the list that appears.
    2. Accept TOSHIBA Service Station Utility Software Notice & Acceptance if required.
    3. Click Check for Updates and install any updates that appear.
      (!) It will be necessary to move the TSS application screen to the right side of the display to reveal any warning notices that appear.
  8. Update your antivirus software and other third party software (i.e. printer, scanner drivers, etc…) installed to the latest version from the manufactures Web site.
  9. Remember your Windows password. You may need to enter it after updating.

 

Updating to Windows 8.1
Make sure your Windows 8 PC is up to date by installing the latest Windows updates
To check for updates in Windows Update
  1. Open Windows Update in Control Panel by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering Windows Update in the search box, tapping or clicking Settings, and then tapping or clicking Install updates.
  2. In the left pane, tap or click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your PC.
  3. If updates are found, tap or click Install updates.
  4. Check for and install any optional updates. See APPENDIX B for how to check for optional updates.
Open the Windows Store and select the “Update to Windows 8.1” tile, or if you see a notification to “Update to Windows 8.1” you can select the “Go to the Store” button

To update to Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store

  1. From the Windows 8.1 product page, select Download. The download and installation of Windows 8.1 may take 1-2 hours, but you can continue using your PC while downloading.
  2. If asked to take any actions, follow the onscreen instructions
  3. When prompted to reboot your PC, select the “Restart now” button or wait for Windows to automatically restart
  4. After Windows restarts, follow any onscreen instructions then sign-in to Windows 8.1

After updating to Windows 8.1

This includes recommended app / driver updates and actions that need to be taken after updating

  1. Update your current version of Windows 8.1 by using Windows Update. Follow these steps to access Windows Update:
    1. In the Settings charm, click Change PC settings.
    2. Under PC settings select Update and Recovery.
    3. Select Windows Update then select Check now.
    4. Follow the on screen instructions to check for and install any updates.
      * Check for optional updates. See APPENDIX B
      (!) Several reboots may be required in order to complete the whole updating process.
  2. Run TOSHIBA Service Station again to update any components and drivers needed for Windows 8.1
  3. If TOSHIBA Service Station updated and installed any components you will need to reboot your PC and run TOSHIBA Service Station one more time and select Check for Updates to ensure all updates are downloaded and installed.
  4. Open the Windows Store by tapping or clicking the Store tile on the Start screen.
  5. Check for updates in the upper right corner of the store screen and install any updates available.

 

Your Windows 8.1 update is complete now.

 

 

 


 

APPENDIX A

 

Components that need to be uninstalled prior to updating to Windows 8.1
The following components if installed on your PC must be uninstalled prior to updating to Windows 8.1.

 

Uninstall Component List
  1. AMD Display Driver (ONLY required on Model Part Numbers beginning with PSD24U, PSD24M , PSD24P)
  2. Intel Proset
  3. Intel Wireless Display
  4. Nvidia GE Force GTxxxx (includes all drivers that begin with Nvidia GE Force GT)
  5. Realtek Audio driver
  6. Realtek Bluetooth Filter Driver Package
  7. Realtek WLAN Driver
  8. TOSHIBA PC Health Monitor

 

To determine if any of the components are installed on your PC follow the instructions below and remove the listed components, if any, prior to the Windows 8.1 update
  1. Press the Windows logo key + X
  2. Select Programs and Features
  3. Look through the list and cross check it against the Uninstalled Components List above to see if any components are required to be removed from your PC
  4. To remove any Uninstalled Components:
    1. Select the component then click Uninstall
    2. Follow the prompts to uninstall the component
    3. Repeat these steps until all Uninstalled Components listed have been uninstalled from your PC

 

 

 


 

APPENDIX B

 

How to check for optional updates with Windows 8
These components must be installed before and after updating to Windows 8.1.

 

The following instructions explain how to check for and install optional updates when using Windows 8.
NOTE: This procedure should be used after you have installed all Windows 8 Important Updates.
  1. After checking for and installing any important updates go back into Windows Update and select Check for updates now
  2. Select No more important updates are available
  3. Select Get more info
  4. Select optional updates are available
  5. Select and install all optional updates
