Information
CD-ROM / no audio

You should first ask the basic troubleshooting questions.
1. Has there ever been sound?
2. If so has any new hardware or software been added? If so what is it? Remove the hardware or software and try again.
3. Does the CD-ROM work for "Data CD's? If not, is it seen as an icon in "My computer"? If not, remove and "reseat" the physical drive, making sure the lock switch is in fact in the "Lock" postition. (Laptop only. The lock switch is on the bottom of the laptop)
4. Check for a boot sector virus.
5. Make sure the CD-ROM disk itself is properly "snapped" on to the spindle.
6. Is the unit playing other sounds, such as with CD-ROM games or Windows event sounds? If not check the sound drivers in "Device manager".
7. Try the Windows CD-ROM player as well as the Toshiba CD-ROM player. Perhaps the software is corrupted.

If none of these questions/answers resolves the issue, go through these options:

Option 1
1. Double-click the Yellow speaker icon at the bottom right hand corner of the taskbar. If you see the icon continue to step 7.
2. If you don't see the "yellow speaker" icon, click on the "Start" button.
3. Go up to "Settings" and select, "Control Panel".
4. Double-click on the "Multimedia" icon.
5. By default the "Audio" tab is open. In the "Playback" section, place a check mark in the box labeled "Show volume control on the taskbar". Close that window.
6. Now you can double-click the "yellow speaker" on the bottom right hand corner of the taskbar.
7. Check to make sure "CD Audio" is an option on the volume control, and if it is, that it is set more than half way up.
8. If "CD Audio" is not listed, go to OPTIONS/PROPERTIES, and place a check mark next to "CD Audio". Be sure that MUTE is not checked.
9. Now, try playing an audio CD, and you should hear sound. If not, go back and make sure that the check in the "Mute" box did in fact clear. On occasion the check mark will not clear and will need to be taken out again. If that doesn't work continue on to Option 2.

Option 2
1. In "Control Panel", double-click "Multimedia".
2. On the "Advanced" tab, double-click "Media Control Devices".
3. Double-click "CD Audio Device" (Media Control).
4. Verify that "Use this Media Control Device" is selected.

If the driver is enabled but you still cannot play audio CD's, remove and reinstall the device. To do so, click "Remove" on the "General" tab in "CD Audio Device (Media Control) properties, and then follow these steps:
1. In "Control Panel", double-click "Add New Hardware".
2. Click "Next", click "No", and then click "Next".
3. In the "Hardware Types" box, click "Sound, Video and Game Controllers", and then click "Next".
4. In the "Manufactures" box, click "Microsoft MCI".
5. In the "Models" box, click "CD Audio" (Media Control).
6. Click "Next", click "Finish", and then restart your computer.
