Information
What You Need to Install Windows 98 on Your Computer

To run Windows 98, Microsoft specifies the following minimum system requirements:

80486DX-66 processor
16 MB RAM
150 MB free disk space
Mouse or other pointing device
VGA or higher resolution display

If your system does not conform to or exceeds these specifications, you should either upgrade your computer hardware or postpone the upgrade to Windows 98.

Upgrading to Windows 98 from Windows 95

To upgrade your Windows 95 system to Windows 98:

  1. Start Windows 95. Put the Windows 98 Upgrade CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  2. The CD-ROM should start automatically. You will be asked to accept the license agreement and provide various bits of information; follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.
  3. Before the actual installation begins, you will be given an opportunity to create a Windows 98 Startup disk. Insert a blank disk in your A: drive and follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.
  4. After the Startup disk is created, Windows 98 files are automatically copied to your system, and Windows is configured according to the existing components in your system. The total installation time will run anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes.

Tip

When prompted to save your Windows 95 files, answer yes-that

way you'll be able to easily uninstall Windows 98 and return to Windows 95, if you later decide to do so.

Caution

After you install the Windows 98 upgrade version, you should

retain your old Windows 95 disks or CD-ROM, even if you do not intend to use them again. You will need the Windows 95 disks/CD if you install the Windows 98 upgrade version on a new or reformatted hard drive.

Removing Windows 98

If you had Windows 95 on your computer and you selected the option to save your old Windows 95 system files during Windows 98 setup, then you can remove all traces of Windows 98 to return to your Windows 95 installation.

One way to know if you can safely remove Windows 98 is to see if Windows 98 is on the list of files that can be removed in the Install/Uninstall page of the Add/Remove Programs dialog box (accessed within the Control Panel). If Windows 98 is on the list, then you can remove it.

  1. Click the Start button, select Settings, and then select Control Panel.
  2. Click the Add/Remove Programs icon. When the Add/Remove Programs dialog box appears, select the Install/Uninstall tab.
  3. Select Windows 98 from the list and then click Add/Remove. A warning box informs you that you are about to remove Windows 98 and restore your previous version of Windows.
  4. Click Yes to remove Windows 98. Click No if you changed your mind and don't want to remove Windows 98.

Note

If you want to uninstall Windows 98 but can't start your computer in Windows 98 mode, start your system with the Windows Startup disk you created during setup. At the A: prompt, type uninstall to begin uninstalling Windows.

Adding and Removing Windows
Components

You can use the Add/Remove Programs icon in the Control Panel to add or remove the accessories and other components of Windows.

Export Control and EULA
