Memory Parity Error Detected, System Halted after installing Windows 98 SE

Issue
The error message "memory parity error detected. System halted" occurs when booting after installing Windows 98 Special Edition.
Procedure
  1. Boot into safe mode (hold down CTRL while booting and choose Safe Mode from the startup menu)
  2. Open the control panel (Start/Settings/Control Panel from the taskbar) and double-click the DISPLAY applet.
  3. Highlight the Settings tab at the top of the Display Properties window.
  4. Click on the Advanced button.
  5. Select the Adapter tab.
  6. Click Change.
  7. Choose Next at the "Update Device Driver Wizard".
  8. Select "Display a list of all the devices in a specific location..."
  9. Click Next.
  10. Choose "Show All Devices".
  11. Select (Standard Display Types) as the manufacturer.
  12. Choose STANDARD DISPLAY ADAPTER (VGA).
  13. Click Next several times until "Finish" is applicable, select it.
  14. Close/Apply any open windows. Reboot when prompted. The system should reboot into normal Windows.
  15. Download and install the latest display drivers for the ATI Rage video adapter. The drivers should be available from ATI's website (http://www.atitech.com.)
