Information
Installing/Upgrading to Windows 2000 on a Satellite Pro 4600 Toshiba Computer

Very Important! Before you start!
This document can be used to complete either a Windows 2000 upgrade or clean install depending on your current operating system.

Microsoft does not recommend upgrading from Windows ME to Windows 2000 so a clean installation of Windows 2000 will be required if you are currently using Windows ME. A table of suggested Microsoft Upgrade paths for Windows 2000 can be located at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/upgrade/default.asp

Application software:
Application software is specific to a computer model's software bundle. Toshiba is typically prohibited, through software licensing agreements, from providing exchanges and/or upgrades for most application software. Eg. DVD Player/Decoders. If a specific Application program does not appear to load or function with Windows 2000 and you do not find an upgrade on the Toshiba PCSupport Website then contact the application manufacturer to purchase a version that works with Windows 2000.

  1. Install the latest Toshiba BIOS version for your specific model.
Check the Toshiba PC Support website for any BIOS updates that may be available for your computer model. Not all models will have BIOS updates. Note: BIOS updates can be located at the Toshiba PC Support Website: http://www.pcsupport.toshiba.com
  2. Installation/Upgrade & Reboot Notes - Important!

    • Locate and Download all required update files before you start - If possible!!
Note: Since this requires web access and quite a bit of space you may find during a clean install that it is a better option to connect your modem and access the web immediately after the initial Windows 2000 setup. Once you have connected to the web, access the Toshiba PC Support Website at: http://www.pcsupport.toshiba.com
    • Web Tip:
Once you have chosen your Product Family and model and have clicked the Download or "Go" button, a complete list of downloadable files will be displayed for that model. Scroll through the "Filter by Operating System" option menu and choose Windows 2000 then click Refresh View. A list of all available W2000 files for your model will be displayed.

      Windows 2000 QFEs (Hotfixes)
Microsoft provides fixes for bugs or glitches in their operating systems as soon as they become available. The fixes are provided first as Hotfixes which are then added to the next available Service Pack. Required Hot Fixes are only available through Microsoft and should be acquired from Microsoft prior to the start of any upgrade to Windows 2000. Known Hot Fixes not available with Service Pack 1 are listed as web links here.
NOTE: Licensing agreements prevent manufacturers from offering Microsoft Hot Fixes (QFEs) directly.

      Required Microsoft Hotfixes:

      • Q259169-RC2 - Some Toshiba Utilities May Not Work Correctly After Suspending Computer. (This package is used to control the CPU speed.)
      • Q261643 - USB Devices missing in Device Manager After Computer Resumes from Hibernation (Microsoft software to restore lost USB devices from the device manager after system resume)
      • Q279491-RC3 - Multiple CardBus Devices Cannot Share IRQ's Mandatory for Wireless Models

      Wireless Warning!
At this time there is a file required for Wireless Communication with Windows 2000 which Toshiba is unable to provide directly due to licensing restrictions. For more information related to this issue contact Microsoft.

Important! This file must be installed as noted in the driver installation step below.

      • Microsoft QFE Q279491-RC3 - Multiple CardBus Devices Cannot Share IRQ's

    • Connect your printer if you have not already done so.
Several times during the driver and Utility installations you may encounter an Installation ReadMe file. If so, print it and read it completely before attempting to run the related installation.
    • DO NOT mix files from Toshiba America and other Toshiba subsidiaries (E.g. Canada, Europe, etc.)
    • DO NOT attempt this installation while the unit is docked into any docking device! See the Using Docking Devices section below.
    • Answer "Yes" to ALL reboot or restart prompts! Reboot the system whenever suggested! You may be required to reboot several times to complete the installation of Windows 2000, each of the drivers and the utilities.
  3. Before you perform an upgrade or installation you should remove the following programs.
Drivers, utilities or modules listed in this section can be removed by using the Add/Remove Program applet in the Control Panel or if the program is not listed go to Start/Programs, find the program if listed and use the programs uninstall feature if available.
Important! You must restart the computer each time you are prompted during an uninstall routine otherwise an uninstall may not be complete.
    • Norton AntiVirus 2000 (Programs) - NAV 2000 is a 95/98 version.
    • Mediamatics DVDExpress
    • RingCentral (Programs)
    • Toshiba Power Saver (Control Panel)
    • Toshiba Software Modem (Control Panel)
    • Toshiba Client Manager/Wireless Network (Control Panel)
    • Yamaha AC-XG Audio (Control Panel)
    • Toshiba Mobile Extensions
  4. Install Windows 2000
Follow all onscreen instructions provided by Microsoft and reboot when prompted! Begin the installation of Windows 2000 choosing either the Upgrade or Clean Install:

Note: Microsoft requires a Clean install of Windows 2000 when you are upgrading from Windows ME.

    Upgrade:

    1. Insert the Windows 2000 CD and the Windows 2000 Welcome screen will appear. Follow the onscreen instructions until the Windows 2000 installation is complete.
    2. Connect to the Compatibility website when prompted.
    3. Download the upgrade pack for setup and compatibility.
    4. Save a copy of the upgrade report for testing purposes
    5. Skip to the section below entitled "Starting Windows for the first time".

    Clean Install:

    1. With the Windows 2000 CD in the CD-ROM drive, power the computer on while holding down the "C" key which boots the Toshiba Computer to the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.
    2. Important Note!
The following step requires pressing the F5 key, not the F6 key as shown on the Windows screen. DO NOT hesitate too long when you see the prompt for F6 or Windows will just run automatically. (The F6 message displays at the very beginning of the W2K install process and is displayed near the bottom left of the screen).

    3. When you see the following message displayed at the bottom of the screen, "Press F6 for SCSI drivers, etc" DO NOT press F6. Press the F5 key instead.
    4. Use the arrow keys to scroll up to the choice labeled: "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC."
Note: This forces an ACPI install and the W2000 Pre-Setup continues.
    5. On the "Welcome to Setup" Screen press ENTER to continue.
    6. Read through the "Windows 2000 Licensing Agreement" using the Page Down key to scroll through the document. Press the F8 key if you agree.
    7. Windows 2000 setup will display your existing partitions and unpartitioned disk space. Use the arrow keys to select the partition you would like to install Windows 2000 on and then press the ENTER key to continue the install. You also have the options to Create a partition in the unpartitioned disk space (C) or Delete the selected partition (D).
    8. Windows 2000 setup will display the drive letter and size of the partition that will be used to hold the Windows 2000 installation. You will also have the option to leave the current file system intact (no changes) - this is the default, or Convert the partition to NTFS. You will be able to convert the partition to NTFS after the Windows 2000 setup is complete. Press the ENTER key to continue.
    9. Windows 2000 setup will copy files to the Windows 2000 Installation folders. After this completes, the configuration will be initialized, the system will reboot, the graphical portion of the Windows 2000 setup will begin, and Setup will detect and install devices.
    10. Windows 2000 offers the opportunity to change regional and keyboard settings if required. If not, simply click on Next.
    11. Enter *Name and Company and press Next. *Name is a required field!
    12. Enter the Product key.
    13. Enter a Computer Name and Administrative Password and click next.
    14. Enter your modem dialing information and press Enter. (Not applicable on all models)
    15. Verify the Time, Date and Time Zone settings and click Next.
    16. Setup Note: Windows 2000 installs applications and components and then performs any final tasks which includes installing the Start Menu and Register components. Windows 2000 then saves its new settings and removes any temp files it has created.

    17. Windows completes the Windows 2000 Setup. Remove any floppy disks and/or CDs, click Finish and Windows 2K will Restart.
  5. Starting Windows for the first time.
When Windows starts for the first time on it's own you will be prompted for the following:
    1. Network Installation Information.
    2. Your Windows Administrator Password.
Note: Both are optional choices at this time.
  6. Installing Drivers, Utilities, Modules and Service Packs.
If you have not already downloaded the Windows 2000 drivers and utilities available for your specific model you should do so now. See "Section B:"

Toshiba Drivers and Utilities can be downloaded from the Toshiba PC Support Website at: http://www.pcsupport.toshiba.com

      1. Toshiba Fast Ether LAN driver for Windows 2000
      2. Windows 2000 Display Driver for Trident Cyberblade XP.
You may find it optimal to adjust your display settings prior to continuing.

Warning! After the first install reboot an error message may occur. If so click through the error and the operating system will boot normally. When the system is rebooted a second time the display will be set into a VERY low resolution mode. Reboot to VGA mode, then restart again and the display should appear normal. Note: This error only occurred on the 1400X1050 resolution display panel.

      3. Hibernation TIP!
If you plan on using Hibernation Mode, Toshiba suggests that you enable and test this mode at this point of the W2000 setup process. Hibernate mode can be enabled in the Control Panel under the Microsoft Power icon/Hibernate tab. Once Hibernate is enabled, Shut Down the unit in Hibernate mode and then restart the computer to verify Hibernation operation is functioning correctly.

Note: Hibernate can fail for several reasons including the following:

        • Faulty or incompatible RAM - Retest with a different memory card
        • Computer not set, recognized or functioning as an ACPI unit.
Note: You can verify ACPI functionality by opening Device Manager and then double-clicking on Computer. ACPI Computer should display. If Standard Machine is displayed further issues may occur during the W2000 setup. Start the setup process over or contact: Toshiba Online Forum - http://go.compuserve.com/toshiba or Toshiba Technical Support at 1-800-457-7777

      16. Toshiba Active Menu for Windows 98, NT, 2000
    1. Windows 2000 Service Packs
Microsoft recommends Windows 2000 Service Packs to provide patches and updates for Windows 2000 applications, utilities and functions which may have been enhanced since your version of Windows 2000 initially shipped. Installation instructions are included with the Windows 2000 Service Pack when it is downloaded. Logon to the Windows Update Site at Microsoft and download the latest Service Pack (Service Pack 1 was available at the time this document was written) http://www.microsoft.com
  7. Using Docking Devices
When you attempt to use a docking device for the first time you should dock the unit prior to powering up the computer. Once docked use the following procedure to update and/or enable the following:
    1. Expansion Station IDE file
Note: An error may occur until the W2000 IDE driver has been updated.
    2. Enable Sound Output for the docking device
Note: The Sound Output option in the Yamaha Control Panel/Analog Tab should be set for BOTH.
    3. DVD models: Enable DMA support
      1. Open Device Manager
      2. Under the IDE/ATAPI devices look at the secondary controller properties.
      3. Go to Advanced Settings and change to DMA.
  8. Special DVD Notes
Toshiba does not offer a DVDExpress 2000 upgrade. The DVDExpress which is preinstalled on the Tecra 8100 can be used with Windows 2000 and can be installed from the Configuration Builder CD. When launching DVDExpress under Windows 2000 an error message may display that says the application was designed for Windows 95 or Windows 98. The application can be launched anyway (this is an option presented to the customer), and it appears to play DVD titles without any problems. The default Windows 2000 DVD Player also appears to work fine once the DVDExpress has been installed. Note: If crackling is heard when playing DVD titles reinstall the Mediamatics DVD Patch for Win 2K as per Step 1 in the section above entitled "Installing Drivers, Utilities, Modules and Service Packs". The following Websites offer trial and downloadable versions of W2000 compatible DVD software that may work.
  9. ACPI If you are experiencing problems with Hibernate or with Power Management you may need to reinstall ACPI. This process can be time consuming. ACPI must be available for ACPI compliant software to first install and then utilize ACPI. Therefore, reinstalling ACPI requires removing those applications and then re-installing them after ACPI is installed and functioning. Because of the difficulty required reconfiguring a system, you might consider starting the W2000 setup process over from the beginning.

    Reinstalling ACPI:
Note: Because of the difficulty required reconfiguring a system, you might consider reformatting the Hard Drive and starting the W2000 setup process from the beginning.

    1. Use Add/Remove to uninstall all software modules such as Power Extensions, Mobile Extensions, Display Power Saver and the Toshiba W2000 utilities.
    2. Go to the Device Manager/View tab and choose the Show Hidden Devices option.
    3. Scroll down to Toshiba Value Added logic devices
    4. Right click and choose uninstall
    5. Reboot -Disregard any errors that may occur.
    6. Reinstall the utilities and modules in the Utilities, Modules, and Service Packs section in the exact order as noted and rebooting each time it is required. DO NOT REINSTALL DRIVERS
